New Bakery Hits the Spot
There are cupcakes and then there is the Cuppie, an over-the-top rendition made by Amy Blake Hafele, who just opened Sweet Spot Bakery in Fort Worth’s Alliance Town Center. Blake is no wallflower, and neither is her bright, bodacious bakery with its silver tables and pink-and-black harlequin walls. “It’s all me – I tend to be a little gaudy, but in my head, it looks really cool,” Blake says cheerfully. A mother of five and an avid home baker, Blake was a schoolteacher who filled her summers working part time at bakeries. Friends begged for her cakes and fried pies, until her kitchen counter became overrun with orders and it was time to go pro. Her recipes are her own, and she’s always dreaming up something new, like her “Shama Lama Ding-Dong” – devil’s-food cake with cream filling and hard chocolate coating that looks like the favorite childhood treat but tastes oh-so-much better. But it’s the Cuppies that draw the most requests, in creative flavors such as the Hummingbird, a banana cupcake with pineapple, pecan and cream cheese frosting; and the Drama Queen, a dark-chocolate cupcake with chocolate chips and hot pink frosting. 2912 Texas Sage Trail, Alliance Town Center, Fort Worth. 469-363-0975
